It is worth mentioning this remarkable building listed on the provincial heritage register, located on the main street. The facility comprises a 2-story brick and stone building and an adjoining one-story annex constructed in 1897. The building was designed by Archibald MacDonald, the Company’s last chief factor. It represents the Hudson’s Bay Company’s transition from a fur trading operation to a retail merchandising business. To Company gave the store a distinctive brick facade to differentiate itself from its fur trade image. As a result, it was advertised as “the best store west of Winnipeg.” The refined appearance has been carried on inside with a modern shopping area covered by an elaborate stamped sheet metal ceiling.
