Let's reach Duck Lake by taking Route 783 west. The First Nations peoples called the small body of water more commonly known today as Duck Lake: Sîsîp sâkahikanihk. It means duck lake. It is believed to take its name from many ducks that migrated through the area in early spring and late fall.
Before the incorporation of our province, the existence of Duck Lake was known. The village dates to 1894. At the time, it was an important center that notably housed the North-West Mounted Police during the uprising of Louis Riel and his followers. The cell in which the legendary Almighty Voice, said Jean-Baptiste, grandson of one of the signatories of Treaty 6, was held captive for having slaughtered a steer of the Government because he was hungry, is currently located at the Museum of Duck Lake.
