Starting at Redberry Lake, another place may intrigue you as you head up the North Saskatchewan River Valley. It is the Semi-Buried Doukhobor House National Historic Site of Canada. Costumed guides tell a fascinating story. Exiled from their homeland, Russian Doukhobors settled southeast of Blaine Lake in 1899, digging into the North Saskatchewan River ravine for shelter. These tenacious settlers lived in half-buried houses until 1904 when log houses were built. Visitors must respect this delicate archaeological site on private property. Intense walking is required to get to the site. Tour participants are encouraged to purchase loaves of Doukhobor bread by pre-ordering and pre-paying online. Loaves will be available on the day of your self- guided tour. Open in summer only. Check the website for details.
