Monument commémoratif Mistusinne

Admire a fragment of the massive rock originally in the South Saskatchewan River Valley at a sacred site formerly used by the Cree Nation. What remains of the gigantic block of stone of glacial origin named Mistasinîy (Cree for "big rock") evoked a resting bison. It was taken after 60 sticks of dynamite were used to make it disappear in 1966 to prevent boaters from damaging their boats once the valley was flooded following the construction of the Gardiner dam. The monument commemorating Mistusinne has an interpretation plaque near the golf course and part of the rock near the cemetery. The original block must have weighed 400 tons based on estimation. Hard to believe we would have done the same today.
