Saskatoon Zoo

With its grizzly bears, wolves, foxes, snowy owls, bald eagles, and many species from here and abroad, the Saskatoon Zoo is a must in summer and winter. It is a densely wooded park, established initially as a nursery for the Dominion, then a nursery for Sutherland, before becoming better known as the Saskatoon Zoo and Forestry Farm. Between 1913 and 1966, the operation grew and shipped 147 million trees across the northern Prairie provinces. The first shipment of trees was sent to farmers in 1916. The park is designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The nursery grew caragana, ash, maple, elm, and willow primarily to create windbreaks and then catch snow in winter to prevent soil erosion and promote crop germination in spring. The park houses the zoo. It includes gardens and historic buildings (Forestry Farm House). The zoo is accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums and features over 80 species. It's the perfect place for a family day out. Check the website for more information and opening hours.
