The community of Whitewood has served as a rest stop for travellers for over a century., Whitewood is at the junction of highways 1 and 9. The town is known for several historical facts. The first election by secret ballot in the Northwest Territories was held in Whitewood in 1894. Whitewood resident R.S. Park travelled to Winnipeg with Louis Riel and an indigenous delegation in 1883 to protest the confiscation of land and ask for the support of Archbishop Taché in Saint-Boniface, before the 1885 uprising.
Whitewood resident Jean-François Guérin was the first dentist to settle in the Northwest Territories. He was also an amateur comedian. He and his beautiful wife formed a travelling theatre company that performed throughout the region.
Earls, countesses, senators, prime ministers, and poor settlers socialized at community functions. Also, writers, comedians, outlaws and bureaucrats have crossed paths in this community, and many have contributed significantly to Saskatchewan and Canada's history and culture.
