Spotlight on the Highlands
(Regina-Moose Jaw-Swift Current-Maple Creek) (Suggested duration: 2 to 3 days, depending on the addition of excursions)
It takes 40 minutes to reach Moose Jaw leaving Regina heading west. Established in 1882 on the eve of the passage of the Canadian Pacific (CP) Railroad in 1883, the town experienced rapid growth from its beginnings as a regional railway yard center and for its connection to the route of its American subsidiary, the Soo Line to Minneapolis and Chicago. Local agriculture soon enabled local economic expansion, as did the illicit liquor trade during the 1920s which attracted several unsavory figures, one of whom may have been Al Capone.
This route along the Trans-Canada Highway will allow you to discover a whole way of life and picturesque traditions. They relate to the world of cowboys, First Nations, and the origins of the famous Royal Canadian Mounted Police, whose mission was to make sure that illicit trade and the integrity of territory and borders between the neighboring nations of the United States of America and Canada was respected at the time.
