The Brave Wolverine Circuit
(Regina-Moosomin) (Suggested duration: 2 to 3 days, depending on the addition of excursions)
It's hard to imagine today coming across an animal as powerful, despite its small size and fast as the legendary Wolverine. The Wolverine is about the size of a dog but belongs to the weasel family. The creature is reputed to be the most ferocious creature on Earth: an aggressive and courageous fighter, able to ward off a bear from its prey. The Wolverine, the First Nations and the coureurs des bois shared this vast territory long before the settlers arrived. The region played a key role in the fur trade industry.
The North West Mounted Police, known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police today, patrolled there regularly. A nearby hill (Spy Hill) was even designated "Wolverine Mountain" by various sources, including Inspector Sévère Gagnon, who camped nearby in 1874 at the dawn of the creation of the police force intended to curb the territorial expansion aspirations of our American neighbours.
The Qu'Appelle River Valley is the common thread of a hydrological basin that connects Regina, the Assiniboine River, the Red River and Hudson Bay. The visitor should seize the occasion to discover the incredible richness of traditions that abound among the Treaty 4 First Nations, our hosts in this region.
Every year during the summer Pow Wow season, we are invited almost every weekend to these unforgettable encounters with the first inhabitants of the territory: Cree, Nakoda, Dakota, Anishinaabe, and other nations. It is a privileged moment to get closer to the First Nations and share some time among family and friends with them. These moments allow celebrating a long-repressed identity in Canada, under the sign of hospitality across the valley, in Pasqua, Standing Buffalo, Sakimay, Cowessess, Kahkewistahaw, or further south at Carry the Kettle. Humility, hospitality and sharing are essential, as is the ceremony, the singing to the sound of the drum, the dancing, the ornamentation and the bannock.
Fort Espérance at Rocanville, north of Moosomin, was the North West Company's oldest pemmican depot. Travel the scenic banks of the Qu'Appelle River to reach the stone monuments marking where the fort once stood. Imagine the bustling scene of company men and indigenous traders preparing pemmican and buffalo hides before setting off on a two-day trek. These men were heading for the Assiniboine River confluence, the gateway to the prized region of the Athabasca District.
