The Grand Delta Circuit
(Prince Albert-Cumberland House)
Even Saskatchewanians aren't too sure when it comes to distinguishing the two Saskatchewan rivers (the North and the South). Both are in the western Canadian Rockies and drain an immense territory that eventually discharges its hydrological load into the Northwest Hudson Bay. The South Saskatchewan River basin is fed by water runoff from several Fransaskois communities. It includes the Trinité region, Bellevue, Saint-Louis, and Wakaw before joining the North Saskatchewan river east of Prince Albert.
From the Forks, the beautiful Saskatchewan River will remind us of its historic role in the fur trade before unveiling its unsuspected treasure: the vast Saskatchewan River delta and the community of Cumberland House. But before we get there, we'll see Nipawin and Lake Tobin — an accessible fishing paradise with superb sandy beaches. The lake was created following the construction of the E.B. Campbell hydroelectric dam in 1963. Ornamental woodcarvers in the region appreciate the driftwood that surfaces on occasion to this day. Fishing for walleye and pike is also good here. Nipawin never fails to mention it to its visitors.
