Moose Mountain Circuit
(Regina - La Rolanderie - Carlyle)
Visiting southeast Saskatchewan means accepting a good dose of mystery. The highlands of Moose Mountain comes from nunataks, an Inuktitut word meaning "isolated peak." It is a mountain rising above the vast ice sheets of the last glaciation. The province's southwestern region witnesses the most spectacular nunataks, but this one deserves a closer look. It overlooks the southern limit of the Aspen Park environment, with its 216 meters height dominating the surrounding plain.
Seen from the Prairie, the south slope of Moose Mountain reveals a marked escarpment, while the north slope offers a more gradual slope. Moose Mountain Provincial Park is home to one of the few Saskatchewan vacation resorts: Kenosee Lake. The park is also located 24 kilometres north of Carlyle, the local capital, where visitors will find various services, including accommodation.
Moose Mountain is believed to have been inhabited for over 11,000 years since the end of the last ice age. As a result, the Nakoda Pheasant Rump First Nation is the custodian of one of the Plains' best-known archaeological sites: Moose Mountain Circle of Influence, a central monument of stones surrounded by a circle, connected in the center by five alignments of stones, a bit like recumbent bicycle spokes. The circle of influences is more than 30 meters in diameter and would have had an astronomical and spiritual vocation. It is possible to visit it by appointment.
The Francophone presence in the region also deserves our attention. Young French and Belgian aristocrats came to lay the foundations of a settlement at the end of the 19th century. La Rolanderie would become the community of Saint- Hubert.
A little to the south, English aristocrats would come, in turn, to found Cannington Manor, today a Provincial Historic Site. The English and French aristocrats indulged in polo, tennis, and hunting with hounds. In the meantime, the locally hired servants did well, as evidenced by the prosperity of the surrounding farms later on.
