The old Pioneer elevator
Stoughton has one of the finest specimens of grain elevators. It is still in excellent condition, so it was often seen on postcards – helped by its bright orange colour. The old Pioneer Elevator is a true regional landmark built by Jacobson Elevator Builders and opened in the fall of 1985. It is one of the last wooden crib structures still standing in Saskatchewan. Featuring a remarkable gravity flow installation, all the mechanics are housed in the building since there is no side annex, as with most elevators built later. The building is impressive. It was built on a floating slab which helped maintain the integrity of the building to this day. The elevator is dustproof, has hardwood floors, and Jacobson Elevator Builders have specially handpicked every plank throughout the building. According to locally built heritage conservation enthusiasts, it is unique as there is not a single knot in the chosen timber to be found. Your turn to judge!
