Saint-Louis

Population: 432 (2021 census)

Saint-Louis is a small village on the south bank of the Saskatchewan River where many Metis settled after the Battle of Batoche. Many of their descendants still live there.

Pleistocene bison

The remains of an "Antiquus" bison were found just a few years ago in Saint-Louis. The ancestor of our contemporary bison lived in the region until about 10,000 years ago. Then, he was obviously much bigger and stronger. The visitor can see on its way a reproduction of this bison from the very end of the Pleistocene, which coincided with the end of the last ice age.

A reproduction of a so-called "Red River" cart recalls the mode of travel between Fort Garry (Winnipeg) and Edmonton in the pretty park at the entrance to the village. The woodsmen created tracks for hunting and fur trading between 1753 and 1898.
