Saint-Victor

Population: 25 (2021 census)

Heading west on a gravel road from Willow Bunch, the visitor reaches a pretty hamlet named “Le Beau Village”. Few people live there today. It doesn’t change the fact though that the Saint-Victor Petroglyph Provincial Historic Site is very close by, in a setting that will appeal to lovers of off-the-beaten-track visits and those open to simply camping in the Sylvan Valley Regional Park, 2 kilometers south of the village.

Still, the Saint-Victor petroglyphs are the only site in North America to feature carved designs in sandstone such as the long-clawed paws of the venerable, now extinct plains grizzly bear, on vertical and horizontal surfaces. These surfaces are crumbling and access to petroglyphs is now restricted. However, the interpretive panels are worth the look from the top of the hill.
